If
you lost a loved one…
you lost your job…
you lost your home
from a storm, hurricane, flood…

If
time flees your presence
because of life’s busy-ness…
your family disconnects from you…
or the other way around….

If
you’ve no time for hobbies…
you’ve no time for friends…
or work seems slow…
or the drudgery never ends…

If
money is tight, food is scarce…
your kids are hungry,
the shelves are bare…

If
you feel as if
the world you know
is being taken from you…

I ask…What’s left that is YOU?

Now…
Upon this thought
Let your mind simmer:

Let’s remove
…your country, national identity, citizenship, your place of birth…
and privacy
and freedom
and identity
have no value…

Let’s remove
…your schooling…
and your degrees and diplomas and titles..
and education and training,
and certifications, validations, and authorizations,
and authority and power
have little value…

Let’s remove
…the material things of your life
your home, vehicles
your gadgets and gizmos
your “creature comforts”
your leisures, entertainments, vacations
and anything else you feel you “deserve”
your hobbies and playthings
the brand of clothes you wear
the clothes you wear
the brands you live by
the things you depend on for everyday living
your “things for me” things
every THING…

Let’s remove
…all of your wealth (or what little of it there is)…
your income, investments, riches
and your money had no value…

Let’s remove
…your employment…
the career you’ve set up for yourself
the resume of achievements
the network of associates
the positions you hold, the accolades, the distinctions and honors received,
the predictable income, stability, and future of retirement
or maybe what you did at work meant nothing…
or you weren’t valued there…
that your efforts seemed unrecognized and fruitless…

Let’s remove
…all of your successes, the triumphs
the trophies and worldly recognition
the applauds and praise you recieved
and that merit and excellence
and doing your best
meant nothing.

Let’s remove
…all of your failures, mistakes, the hurts, the disappointments…
and we could make them disappear
and you never failed
and your feelings aren’t allowed to be hurt.

Let’s remove
…all of the people in your life that you say “made you”
your family
your friends
your co-workers
your teachers
your heroes, your idols
your enemies, bullies, the ones you avoid.

Let’s remove
…all opinions they had of you
and perceptions they think of you
and attitudes they have towards you
and feelings they have for you
whether good or ill.

Let’s remove
…all external frameworks of belief that you’ve anchored yourself to
be it religion…
or politics…
or social issues…
or entertainment…
or whatever or whoever it is you passionately believe in
from superficial to deeply personal

Let’s remove
…your health, your strength,
or your limbs…(like Nick Vujicic)
and your ability to move about freely…

Let’s strip everything EXTERNAL from you that
the world uses to identify you…
people use to identify you…
you use to identify yourself to the world.

Ask Yourself: “WHAT REMAINS OF ME?”

Am I ANGER or HATE?
or BITTERNESS or REGRET?
or VENGEANCE or PAIN?
or FEAR or DOUBT?
or HOPELESSNESS or DESPAIR?

Am I PLEASURE or COMPLACENCY?
or APATHY or LAZINESS or CARELESSNESS?

Am I UNDECIDED, LISTLESS, UNANCHORED?

or

Am I LEADERSHIP?
PATIENCE? HOPE?
FAITH? ENDURANCE?

How about HAPPINESS?
FORGIVENESS? CLEANLINESS?
CREATIVITY? ORGANIZATION?
LIGHT? HEALING? UNDERSTANDING?
SELFLESSNESS? SERVICE?

Am I LOVE?

For the things I do are the fruits of who I currently am making myself to be.

When trials and struggles seem to take things away from us and it seems we’ve lost a part of our lives…it is in those moments that we discover our true selves.
